The national lockdown has presented us with peculiar challenges but has not curtailed our delight for running. It’s a truism well encountered by legendary South African leader, Nelson Mandela, during his tumultuous years. Hiding from adversaries, he resorted to running on the spot to maintain his fitness. Aptly evident from his life, it’s crucial to adapt, as we may soon confront a reality where even a lone run in our favourite park might be off-limits.

Embracing Solo Running

With prevalent closures, the concept of a marathon in a bustling city park seems elusive. But the vast expanse of nature still invites us. Unprefaced trails beg exploration, maintaining virtuous distance from the throngs. Just remember not to touch gates or handrails without gloves, to resist touching your face, and to avoid large congregations of fellow runners. Remember, intense or prolonged running can dormant your immunity, so discretion is key.

A Unique Take on Mindfulness

The boon of solo running is the opportunity to immerse oneself in mindfulness. It is uncritical of defining parameters but commits to the elimination of distractions, grounding thoughts, staying unplugged, avoiding speed and distance obsessions, focalizing on breathing technique, and bodily movement, and experiencing nature mentally and physically.

Pairing with Your Canine Partner

While physical distancing is vital, this doesn’t sever the bond with your furry friend. No evidence suggests our four-legged companions contribute to the spread of this human ailment. As you run in unison, you may consider entering a dog-and-owner race once normalcy resurfaces, but remember to attend only if they haven’t been cancelled or postponed.

Run To Do Your Chores

If out-of-home exercise becomes taboo, running could become your weekly grocery shopping regime. Ensure you have a sturdy rucksack to withstand your purchases and a wider route for an extended workout. The return route will certainly present higher intensity depending on your toiletries stockpile.

Backyard Athletics

Even confined spaces can foster activity. Taking inspiration from a French athlete, who covered a marathon’s worth in his apartment balcony, your garden or yard could become your next running track. High-knee or spot running can be equally challenging when performed intensively.

Homegrown Stair Running

If dwelling in an apartment, you own a fitness asset – your staircase! Make them your running allies, run up and walk down repeatedly. While professional stair running is catching on globally, homegrown versions pack equal adrenaline and muscular challenge.
