The idyllic town of Pontefract, West Yorkshire, is home to many remarkable individuals, but none quite as inspiring as Jasmine Barnett. This self-employed childminder, a mother of two young boys, became a symbol of strength and resilience by training for a marathon after an arduous battle with a rare form of leukaemia.

The Decision to Run a Marathon

Jasmine embarked on her fitness journey in 2018 after losing a significant amount of weight. During her family vacation in Orlando, she discovered that she had won a spot in the London Marathon and started her training immediately. Unfortunately, her attempts to improve her running times were hindered by unexplained fatigue, a persistent sore ankle, and recurring illness.

In February 2019, Jasmine received the shocking diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukaemia. Despite being hospitalized in isolation for a month, followed by six months of chemotherapy, Jasmine deferred her marathon entry to the following year. She was now armed with an unyielding spirit encouraged by 18 months of remission.

The Challenge of the First Marathon

The London Marathon marked Jasmine’s first foray into running events. The uncertainties of the global pandemic made preparation difficult, significantly affecting Jasmine who had to shield due to her previous leukaemia diagnosis.

Facing and Conquering Fears

Facing the marathon could have been a daunting task for Jasmine, but she was fortunate to have her husband secure the last-minute entry and stand by her during this gruelling challenge. And while their actual route remained a mystery as they planned to undertake the journey during their Devon holiday, Jasmine’s mother and children displayed stellar support by cheering them throughout the gargantuan task.

Staying Motivated and Raising Awareness

Jasmine found her motivation in her resilience and a burning desire to finally earn her marathon medal. This run was more than a personal achievement; it was a conscientious initiative. Jasmine chose to fundraise for Leukaemia Care to raise awareness about the early diagnosis of this life-threatening disease, which is often overlooked until it’s too late.

Jasmine’s hope for the race day was simple, finish the marathon. This might seem modest to some, but for someone who has been through a life-altering illness just 18 months prior, it represents an extraordinary triumph.

Running for health, resilience, awareness, and life, Jasmine Barnett is a testament to the unwavering spirit and tenacity of every woman out there. A shining beacon, encouraging us to lace up our own running shoes and chase after our dreams, with hearts full of hope.
