We all have our unique definitions of fitness, and that’s the beauty of it. Our goals vary as much as our body sizes, shapes, and capabilites. Engaging in physical activity shouldn’t be dictated by social norms or stereotypes. It’s for everyone – irrespective of age, ability, or physique. It’s high time we shed the idea that fitness equates only to a toned body or the number on the scale.
Finding Your Fitness Drive
Establishing a specific goal can fuel your determination to stay active, but remember that it doesn’t have to be directly linked to physical appearance or weight loss. According to fitness expert Betsan de Renesse, diet plays a more crucial role when it comes weight management. She says, “Delinking exercise from weight loss, body size, or aesthetics unveils a spectrum of more specific, attainable, and inspiring targets. It’s incredibly liberating!”.
Milestones based on enhancing your strength and endurance can be a viable alternative to scale-dependent goals. Just keep in mind that the most enduring motivation stems from doing it for yourself and the nourishment it brings to your well-being.
Fitness certainly plays a role in weight management, but its true essence lies beneath the surface. Regular exercise enriches our emotional well-being while promoting physical health. As Tatiana Kuzmowycz, an experienced fitness planner, explains, “Fitness is not a universal standard. Just like we have different bodies, we have different fitness journeys. What matters is that we respect and honour our unique bodily needs and preferences.”
Embarking on Your Fitness Quest
If you haven’t explored the fitness landscape yet, it’s okay to feel a tad nervous about starting. Dr Elena Touroni, a well-known psychologist, suggests that our common goal for a healthier mind and body can bring us together. Participating in fitness clubs or group classes can foster a sense of belonging and mutual encouragement.
If you’re worried about fitting in at a fitness center, Kuzmowycz advises exploring women-only or unisex facilities. Thorough research will lead you to an environment where you can feel comfortable and empowered. Most places now showcase their ethos and patron-dynamic on their website and social media platforms.
