Embrace the Outdoors – Take Charge of Your Health Responsibly

In the light of recently relaxed lockdown measures, leading healthcare specialists have come forward to guide the citizens in England on how to embrace physical activities while maintaining safety measures. The reopening of outdoor recreational spaces such as golf courses, basketball courts, and tennis courts under the refreshed ‘Stay Alert’ guidelines has been received positively by many.

Eminent medical professionals applaud these changes as a potential antidote to the mental and physical health issues induced by the lockdown. However, they continue to emphasize the importance of maintaining hand hygiene and physical distancing to curtail further spread of the virus. Engaging only with one individual outside the home and self-isolating as much as possible when not exercising, is encouraged.

The new set of guidelines, effective since last Wednesday, brings a sigh of relief for many, allowing them several freedoms for the first time in nearly two months. Now, citizens can:

  • Exercise more than once a day outdoors, providing an opportunity for parents to engage in their own activities while also letting their children out to play.
  • Access outdoor sports venues, including tennis and basketball courts, golf courses, sailing and angling sites. Do keep in mind, though, that outdoor gyms remain off-limits.
  • Enjoy team sports outdoors, provided the other members are from the same household.
  • Meet one individual from outside their household – while maintaining the mandated two-meter distance, of course!

And the best part? There’s no time limit to these activities!

Health consultant Dr. Zoe Williams reacts positively to these changes, “Freedom to exercise outside home multiples times a day could potentially uplift the mental and physical health of the country…” However, she doesn’t forget to reiterate that the virus is still at large and it’s our responsibility to protect the vulnerable. Regular handwashing and following general health advice, like not touching your face while outdoors, is crucial.

Speaking of the emotional side, Dr. Sarah Jarvis acknowledges how the newfound freedom to meet a loved one outside the household – albeit with restrictions – will be a boon to many. She reminds us all to keep in mind that the ‘return of more freedom’ should not mean a return of the virus.

Tim Hollingsworth from Sport England echoes these emotions, emphasizing that while physical activity is vital for overall well-being, we should proceed cautiously.

“Everyone should ensure they can follow the government guidance for outdoor activities in a safe and controlled manner before venturing out.”

The aforementioned guidelines are specific to citizens residing in England only.
