Feeling like you’re stuck in a fitness quicksand? Noticing a plateau in your progress towards that dream physique? Here are some effective strategies to breathe new life into your workout routine and make your fitness journey more enjoyable courtesy of our fitness expert, Max Strider.

Get Ample Sleep

Slumber is the period when our bodies recover and develop. If your training and nutrition are on point but you’re falling short in sleep, you’re skipping out on crucial recuperation time. Our body cycles through four sleep stages with the third and fourth being where most physical healing and growth occur. Achieving adequate, uninterrupted sleep not only fuels energetic gym sessions but fosters muscle and joint recovery. Aim for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep per night, and include routine wind-down practices like reading and creating a dark sleep environment.

Revise Your Routine

Our bodies boast an incredible talent for adapting to familiar challenges. To keep your muscles guessing, mix up your exercise protocol every six weeks. Work different muscle groups together, venture outside your comfort zone with new movements, and play around with different rep schemes and rest periods. This can trick your body into building muscle. Utilize a trusted fitness professional or a knowledgeable gym buddy to help design your new program.

Track Your Progress

Progressive overload is key to continued growth and development. Keeping a workout log enables you to challenge your body systematically by progressively increasing the workload on your muscles. By recording your workout details, such as weights used, number of reps and sets completed, you can establish benchmarks to improve upon.

Buddy Up

Working out with a partner can bolster motivation and introduce new growth-inducing training methods. Encouragement from a partner can push you to complete that final rep that you might have skipped if training solo. Training together also allows for advanced techniques like forced reps, adding extra stimulus to your muscles.

Embrace the Challenge

Don’t fear pushing your limits occasionally. Forcing our muscles to uncharted territories is what stimulates growth. Remember, however, that pushing to the failure point also exhausts the nervous system. Consider only working to failure on the final set of each exercise to maintain overall productivity.

Leave the Distractions Behind

Your phone is not invited to this workout party. Waiting for a machine while someone fires off texts is frustrating, and it’s also hurting your fitness progress. Optimal hormonal release occurs with rest periods that last between one and two minutes. Long, phone-distracted rests can hinder your results. Focus on your workout – everything else can wait.
