Cancer Research UK invites you to participate in a unique 5K event, christened as the ‘Visionary 5K Run for Life’, set to take place on the 26th of September. This event is designed to raise funds for groundbreaking cancer research.
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the usual mass event has necessitated modification. This year, the 26th of September brings the opportunity to run your own 5K in your local park or community. Whether you’re a solo participant or prefer to join in socially distant small groups, you’re welcome to break out your running shoes for a great cause.
A Virtual Touch That Connects Souls
A live stream will be hosted on the official event’s Facebook page from 9.30am on the 26th of September. This virtual community vibe aims to replicate the inspiringly heartwarming Race for Life event, commencing with a warm-up routine followed by a minute’s silence – a moment of homage for family and friends either no longer with us, or currently battling the disease.
Through the broadcast, cancer survivors and those personally affected will have the chance to share their stories and emphasize the importance of these fundraisers for essential research. The broadcast will facilitate donation opportunities, as viewers are encouraged to embark on their 5K journey post-event, at their preferred time throughout the following weekend, or anytime throughout September.
Every Pound Counts
Sarah Pickersgill, director of event branding, expressed her sentiments, stating that although the pandemic may have put our lives on hold, it hasn’t stopped cancer. She added that the continuity in making progress for those affected by cancer is vital now more than ever. Pickersgill called upon the public to take part in the event in order to make a real difference in battling cancer. She concluded, “Whether you can raise £10 or £100, every pound contributes to the cause. Your challenge is not only to have fun and keep safe, but to also help put the brakes on the hold cancer research has faced due to COVID-19.”
In the light of the pandemic, the expected 30 percent decline (£160m) in fundraising this year for Cancer Research UK is a reflection of the challenges faced across the board. As the charity plans to cut £44m from research expenses, it urges participants to run, jog, walk, and contribute towards ensuring the future of lifesaving cancer research.
Be a part of the cause, sign up for free for the ‘Visionary 5K Run for Life’ on the 26th of September, and let’s together strive towards a cancer-free world.
Since its inception in 1994, the event, in collaboration with Tesco, has successfully raised over £890m, signifying its immense contribution to cancer research.
