A Rejuvenating Adventure at Ullswater: Nature, Sport and Relaxation

by Sofia Moreau

A breathtaking view of Ullswater, a shimmering blue body of water surrounded by lush greenery and a quaint 47-room resort on its shores.>

From the edge of a cliff, eyes set on Ullswater’s inviting expanse, I take a leap into the serene 17-degree water. This was my wake-up activity during my visit at one of the most picturesque resorts in the heart of the Lake District.

The resort is not just about getting from point A to B, but about basking in the serenity through a sensorial immersion into nature. It’s a tranquil hotel, nestled in 18 acres of the Lake District national park offering a varied form of relaxation and adventure.

An Invigorating Dive into Ullswater

My first day at the resort started with wild swimming under the deft guidance of our seasoned swim instructor. This wasn’t the usual competitive race against the tide. We dived in the crystal clear water and reveled in the surrounding beauty. The thrill of jumping off Kailpot Crag was incredibly refreshing, and it immediately connected me with nature, which seems to be a key essence of this resort.

The Resort that Captivates

The hotel is the resort’s main attraction, seamlessly blending its Georgian heritage with a modern wing to accommodate 40 comfortable bedrooms. Also on offer are a library for calming downtime with board games, a swimming pool, spa, and two fantastic restaurants – a heavenly retreat at RampsBeck Restaurant and a laid-back spot at The Living Space.

I chose to stay in one of the hotel’s newly introduced, plush Outside rooms – a meticulously designed shepherd hut, built to accommodate two, with signature oak decor, a standalone copper bathtub for cold-water soaks, and a decked exterior area featuring a cozy firepit.

Outdoor Fun at its Best

And the adventure extends beyond the hotel’s confines. A leisure jaunt away from my hut revealed the resort’s garden and a vibrant meeting point called the Glasshouse. It’s a go-to place for grabbing a rejuvenating cup of coffee, participating in outdoor yoga, going for an evening walk post-dinner, or indulging in a game of table tennis.

The highlight of this resort is water-based fun. You are encouraged to try kayaking, paddleboarding or simply dress up in a wetsuit for a chilly swim. And for fitness enthusiasts, there are specialized swimming sessions which include coaching in the endless pool.

There’s always something exciting for those keen on land-based activities. Grab a bicycle for a fun ride, try archery or follow a map for a hearty hike.

My retreat included a blissful full-body spa massage and a captivating hike to the Aira Force waterfall. By the end of my stay, I found myself deeply re-energized, already planning my next visit.
