October marks the launch of International Menopause Awareness Month, a dedicated period highlighting the importance of understanding and discussions around this often misunderstood life transition. 52-year-old TV presenter, writer, life coach, and entrepreneur *Sharon’*, uses her platform to challenge the stigma around menopause, sharing her insights and personal journey with women across the globe.

Menopause: An Evolving Conversation

“Without a doubt, conversations around menopause are increasingly becoming more open and accessible,” says Sharon. “I love that it’s no longer a hushed topic. Everyone seems to be discussing menopause now, which is crucial because of the emotional sensitivity it often brings about.”

When Sharon disclosed her decision to have a hysterectomy during a live TV show, she was overwhelmed by the immediate response from viewers. Says Sharon, “Within 24 hours, 10,000 women reached out. I couldn’t respond to everyone, which led me to pen my book. There’s a plethora of information – sometimes overwhelming – available on the internet. I wanted to provide a source of support.”

Sharon went beyond writing by founding *Empowered Femme*, a community focused on helping women build their self-confidence and love themselves. “I assist women daily, and it’s something I take pleasure in,” Sharon remarks. “I’ve learned to take care of myself and understand that genuine happiness must come from within, which further fuels my passion for this cause.”

Her Personal Menopause Journey

“I started noticing symptoms incredibly early – around the age of 39. After my hysterectomy at 46, the surgical menopause hit hard. My usually vibrant mood altered, and I experienced sweats and anxiety,” explains Sharon.

Joys of Exercise: A Pillar of Menopausal Management

Sharon believes strongly in the power of a good workout to manage menopause symptoms. “My workout routines have evolved over time. While I enjoyed running in my younger years, my work-from-home lifestyle has necessitated a shift in my exercise habits. Today, morning yoga sessions ground me, and I especially value having a strong, flexible body.”

She also leans heavily on walking her dog, Teddy, with her husband, supplemented by a weekly visit from a personal trainer to keep herself accountable.

The Fitness-Sleep Connection: A Vital Aspects of Menopause

For Sharon, maintaining an active lifestyle is crucial for her sleep cycles. “On days when I’ve been sat at my laptop for too long and haven’t exercised, it negatively impacts my sleep. I either find it hard to fall asleep or, I wake up with restless legs. Those occasions serve as a reminder about the significance of physical activity, both for my body and mind.”

Navigating Menopause: How Does Sharon Do It?

“Maintaining a sense of humor is vital,” laughs Sharon. She recently participated in a fun, candid event called *Melodious Menopause Monologues* to emphasize the essence of open conversations about menopause. The event aimed at normalizing such discussions, encouraging a continuous flow of communication among women about their various experiences during this stage of life.

“I’m asked frequently to contribute to various menopause events due to my outspoken standpoint on the topic. However, this one truly stood out to me because it highlights the significance of humor and the power in women sharing their experiences in a passionate, illustrative manner. Telling stories is an incredible way to pass information down the generations. A group of women sharing their highs and lows of menopause is an excellent method to learn and normalize such an important phase of our lives.”

Sharon spearheads initiatives that support women on their menopause journey, demonstrating that it is indeed possible to thrive during this part of life while encouraging open dialogues about menopause.
