The tides of health are resoundingly shifting post-lockdown with over 34 million individuals gearing up to bolster their fitness and nutritional habits. Recent experiences have heightened health consciousness among 70 per cent of the population. Approximately two-thirds are now eager to bolster their health as they turn the page on the pandemic chapter.
This newly-emerged drive for stronger health has led to half of the respondents committing to a more active lifestyle. Meanwhile, a quarter have ventured into a fresh nutritional plan or physical fitness regimen.
According to a health expert from a leading wellness clinic, people’s health has significantly been affected over recent months. From indulgent eating habits, the lack of regular exercise, to hitting the bottle a bit too frequently, many are presently grappling with the consequential effects of lockdown.
The investigation, undertaken by a reputable health institution, exposed some widespread health dilemmas faced during the lockdown period that prompted individuals to make changes. Impaired sleep tops the chart with a reported 35 per cent of respondents facing difficulties. Others struggled to adhere to a wholesome diet (23 per cent), while 16 per cent revealed increased alcohol consumption during lockdown. High blood pressure and stress were also among the concerns raised.
Given the present public health campaign aimed at decreasing obesity rates, individuals, especially in light of the ongoing pandemic, are further inspired to reform their habits. Notably, obesity impacts two-thirds of adults in the country, putting them under significant risk of succumbing to chronic health conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.
Current research reveals that obese people face higher risks of getting seriously ill if they were to contract the novel coronavirus.
Public attitudes towards health are diversifying positively. Increased health awareness among people is evident in visits to health clinics, with a noticeable shift in the demographics of those seeking attention. There’s been an increase in health-seekers who are symptom-free and seeking health evaluations, emphasizing the readiness of individuals to grasp control of their well-being.
Despite noble intentions, sticking to resolutions can pose a challenge. Nine out of ten respondents found it challenging to adhere to new habits, with fifty per cent lacking the motivation to sustain them.
To convey assistance to those seeking long-term changes, experts brought forth their top tips aiming to kindle motivation and promote lasting improvements to health.
Setting up a Routine
Getting a routine in place, both at home and at work is essential in making beneficial lifestyle alterations. Incorporating a routine fosters a healthier diet and curbs unnecessary snacking. Earmarking time for exercise becomes easier with a well-calculated routine.
Rise to the Challenge
A great way to embark on a new exercise program is to lay a challenge for oneself. It could be something as simple as running a 5K by the close of the year or cycling a certain distance regularly.
Beneficial Rest
Strive for seven to eight hours of sleep per night to refresh the mind and body for maintaining a balanced lifestyle.
Socialize
If motivation seems low, connecting with friends virtually for workout sessions might help. Sync workouts, get a bit competitive, or simply do some home workouts together over a video call.
Going at your Own Pace
Lockdown’s influence on us isn’t solely physical but mental as well. So in times of anxiety, don’t overdo it. Move at your pace and abide by your comfort level.
