Post-lockdown, navigating our old routines feels somewhat daunting. However, a fresh national study emphasizes that there is a silver lining. It appears that the lockdown has led to British individuals becoming more intentional about their health and lifestyles.
An estimated 60% of Britons have committed to prioritizing their health and wellbeing as we emerge from lockdown, indicating the profound effect this unprecedented time has had. Additionally, 30% of these individuals reported an increase in physical activity since the lockdown started.
Other health-related behaviors were also noteworthy. Approximately 70% of respondents are taking supplementary vitamins, while 44% have embraced new hobbies. More so, 39% are incorporating more homemade meals into their diets, with the 18-24 age group leading the trend. As a Psychologist and Mental Health Specialist says, “Learning new skills may be part of the silver lining of the crisis.”
The Lingering Anxiety
The study also yielded concerning results. It revealed a significant 70% of UK residents expressing apprehension about returning to crowded areas. Women and individuals over the age of 55 appeared to be the most worried about reintegrating.
Approximately half of the UK population disclosed intentions to frequent pubs and restaurants lesser than pre-lockdown. Further, swiftly switched working conditions have impacted the mental health of 46% of workers now operating from their homes. Furthermore, over 50% reported spending longer hours on digital devices.
Staying Strong in Uncertain Times
“During the months of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have found ourselves all in a crisis together,” the specialist explains, “Anxiety during a crisis is, in large part, a result of uncertainty and unpredictability.”
The expert recommends overcoming lingering anxiety through small, well-planned steps and scheduling daily routines. This can help bring certainty to one’s day and reduce anxiety. Another piece of advice is to limit exposure to the news and social media, as the surplus of negative information can steeply affect mental health. Being assertive about what we believe is right can also be empowering and beneficial to our mental wellbeing.
Original health regimes may have been disrupted, but this new perspective on health shows that late crises can lead to positive change. It’s all about embracing the opportunity.
